Lynn Workmeister Obituary (1941 – 2021) – Fort Ashby, West Virginia

Cumberland, Maryland-
Lynn H. Workmeister, 80, of Cumberland, died on December 31, 2021 at Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh, PA. Born October 20, 1941, he was the son of the late John F. Workmeister, Sr. and Margaret (Dye) Workmeister.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 58 years, Jane Workmeister, Pittsburgh, PA, his beloved daughter Kathryn (“Katie”) Shearon, and her husband James, Pittsburgh, PA, his grandsons Samuel and J. Lincoln Shearon, Pittsburgh, PA, sister-in-law, Judy Workmeister, Cumberland, MD, sister-in-law Claudia Zimmerman and brother-in-law Chuck Zimmerman, Perry, GA, brother-in-law William E. Jackson, Macon, GA, and various nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his brother John F. Workmeister, Jr. and his niece Margaret (“Molly”) Workmeister.
Lynn graduated in 1959 from Allegany High School. He attended Potomac State College from 1959-1961. Lynn graduated with a BA in Political Science from the University of West Virginia in 1963. He continued his studies at the University of Baltimore School of Law, where he studied. graduated in 1967.
Lynn returned to Cumberland in the fall of 1967 to join the family business.
He has been involved in both insurance and real estate. He became a partner of Coldwell Banker Workmeister Realtors (which is now Coldwell Banker Professional Real Estate Services) and continued to work as a real estate agent. In addition, he was a member of the Cumberland Real Estate Board for over 40 years, earning the title “Real Estate Agent Emeritus”.
Mr. Workmeister was from the Emmanuel Episcopal Church, where he was a choir member for over 30 years.
He was vice president of the Cumberland Jaycees and past president of the Allegany County Chamber of Commerce. Lynn was owned by Potomac Lodge # 100, AF & AM; 32nd. diploma, Cumberland Scottish Rite Bodies; Ali Ghan Shrine, where he was an original member of the Highlanders; Former Manager, Cumberland Court # 117, R.0.J .; Cumberland / Frostburg elk; Aerial # 245, FOE; and Lodge # 271, LOOM
Lynn was proud to be an original member of the Allegany County Fire Council. He also served on the regional council of SMU. Lynn was appointed to a 5-year term on the state SMU board of directors by Governor Parris Glendening.
More appreciated by his family than any of his accomplishments was his incredible sense of humor. His ability to speak in public beautifully morphed into astute joke-telling skills! As many of his colleagues at Coldwell Banker can attest, you can never know when the next joke will be played. He found great satisfaction in his work and loved this town of Cumberland where he grew up.
Lynn’s hobbies included hunting Canada geese on the east coast, fishing in Canada and at her favorite place in Maryland, Deep Creek Lake. Her family spent many summers and weekends at Deep Creek, where Lynn and Jane also enjoyed flying their Flying Scot # 2112. Their 35 year membership in the Deep Creek Yacht Club, Turkey Neck has created many lasting friendships over the years.
Lynn has been blessed in her life by a caring and kind young man named Joshua McKenzie, who made the decision to be an organ donor. Lynn was, and her family will always be grateful for this incredible gift.
Friends will be received at Upchurch, PA Funeral Home, 202 Greene Street, Cumberland on January 13, 2022 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.
The funeral will be held at Emmanuel Episcopal Church, 16 Washington Street, Cumberland, on January 14, 2022 at 11:00 a.m., with Reverend Marsha Bell officiating.
The bearers will be Tim Workmeister, the Honorable J. Frederick Sharer, Bill Lovett, John Clark, Bob Hacker and John Wunderlick.
Interment will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Molly Workmeister Scholarship Fund, c / o Virginia Tech Foundation, 902 Prices Fork Road, Suite 4500, Blacksburg, VA 24061. The scholarship will be awarded to a deserving student from Allegany High School who will attend Virginia Tech.
