Foreign currency stolen from Hays Travel in Stanley

DETECTIVES investigating a theft at a travel agency request information on anyone attempting to exchange large volumes of foreign currency.

A quantity of banknotes including euros, US dollars and Turkish lira were taken away on a flight to Hays Travel in Front Street, Stanley on Friday.

Durham Police officers investigating the theft are asking for information on any suspicious or unusual attempts to exchange large amounts of foreign banknotes.

The armed robber fled with a bag of money at around 10:40 a.m. after store staff were threatened with an ax.

The suspect in the case was arrested hours later on Friday following a major police operation in and around the city.

Peter Elvin, 40, appeared in Newton Aycliffe Magistrates’ Court on Monday on charges of robbery and possession of a bladed article.

Elvin, Dunholme Road, Newcastle, will next appear at Durham Crown Court on November 1.
